In early childhood education, transition is defined as “the process or period of changing from one state or condition to another”. Transitions are part of everyday life – from arrival and departure to meal and play times and nappy change and sleep times. Our goal as educators is to make these transitions smooth, reassuring, and collaborative. We view transitions as moments of change throughout the day and they support opportunities to help children adapt and grow.

Not many adults experience the range of transitions some children deal with regularly. While adults can find transitions challenging, we sometimes have unreasonable expectations of how well children will cope with the changes they are experiencing. On the other hand, we can be sensitive to the impact of transitions for some children and take simple steps to support them in managing change.

Long, uninterrupted play periods enable children to explore the world and build skills in concentration and curiosity. To support this, we reduce unnecessary transitions, helping children maintain a continuous learning experience.

Rituals differ from routines in that they allow children to experience transitions without feeling rushed or disengaged. These special, intentional actions (of ritual) make everyday moments meaningful, fostering deeper connections and enhancing children’s engagement in classroom activities.

Transitions should be flexible and responsive, not bound by rigid schedules. Educators assess the classroom’s energy, children’s alertness, and overall atmosphere to determine the right timing for transitions. This approach minimises stress and maximises support, encouraging smoother and more relaxed changes.

Documenting the Journey

Documenting each child’s transition journey is a valuable practice. By capturing these stories, we reflect their learning and development, creating a record of their growth and resilience. For children who need additional support, a collaborative transition plan with families provides a personalised, consistent approach to help them adjust.

Incorporating smooth transitions and meaningful rituals into early learning programs nurtures children’s sense of Belonging, Being, and Becoming. By building predictable yet flexible routines, we help children feel secure, present, and ready to embrace each new experience.
